We waited for a special occasion to open this gift from a dear friend. So glad we did. The tannins had settled nicely and after 2 hours of decanting we had this alongside a pork loin roast. Nose was kirsch and a hint of anise. On the palate, the layers unfolded with a smooth acidity that hinted at an earthiness, and a burst of dark fruit forward. A spice and mint finish.

Like so many of Amadieu's wines, this very much captures the essence of place and the grapes that thrive there, here the power of Gigondas, the heat and concentration, but in a way that still preserves the fresh, lively fruit and the more subtle elements of the region. Ripe, dark fruit, mostly blackberry and blueberry, leads the way, but the acidity carries waves of tart cherry and cranberry, and that fruit is nicely complemented by earthy and herbal notes (including licorice), black pepper, and a strong minerally, even salty, quality. At 14.5% ABV, it's a bit too hot, with an interfering brown spirit aroma, but its main problem is that it's just too rough and earthy, lacking in that balance of composition that keeps such powerful wines from tipping over. That being said, it's certainly a notch below most of the other Amadieu wines I've tasted, and in that sense something of a slight disappointment, though it's still very good given its overall authenticity and expressiveness. And as the acidity builds and the roughness smoothes out with time in the open, there appears to be quite a bit of room for improvement here after 2-3 more years of aging, perhaps up to 89 and maybe even hitting 90.

Quite dry and firrm, the vintage speaks, Grenache is discrete here - still, well build, professional product, no complaints - while not much joy, either. #DJT
