  • Ripe dark fruit notes, maybe a little confected, certainly quite sweet and rich. Sharp acidity, open, good length. 84-86

  • Pretty dark and somewhat translucent black cherry color, turns towards more luminous red cherry color in the rim. Rather sweet and somewhat alcoholic nose with aromas of dark berry marmalade, some perfumed floral tones, a little bit of juicy and ripe dark plums and a hint of smoke. The wine is dry, quite intense and full-bodied on the palate with ripe and pretty concentrated flavors of woody spice, plummy dark fruits, some vanilla, a little bit of sweet oak, a hint of blackberry marmalade and a touch of brambly raspberry. Overall the wine is pretty dense and chewy, but unlike with many Portuguese Touriga Nacionals, the structure here relies mainly on the moderately high acidity, as the modest tannins feel pretty ripe and round. The finish is quite long and juicy with light tannic grip and generous flavors of vanilla oak, some savory wood spice, a little bit of ripe dark fruits, a hint of juicy blackberries and a touch of sweet baking spices.

A balanced, firm and quite big Touriga Nacional with good emphasis on the acidity and savory berry flavors, although overall the wine is a bit too ripe and oaky for my taste. Especially the quite noticeable vanilla character distracts me a bit too much and overwhelms much of the lovely, floral varietal aromas of Touriga Nacional. Overall a good new world wine for weekday evening meals, but nothing particularly memorable.
