  • medium yellow color, subtle green apple, guava, honey on nose. Tropical fruits, honey on the palette, heavy bodied. Opened up with lots of air. Good balance of acidity and sweetness, but lacks some complexity. 93pts

  • Wine Tandems Night (Sets of Mini-Verticals) (The Grand Room at Industrial Eats, Buellton, CA): Opened too soon, of course, but by intent, as we were pairing younger and more aged versions of the same wine and matched this with a 2004 of the same bottling. Unsurprisingly, the acid was masked by the tropical fruit, which came off as lush but a bit fat. There were also notes of stone fruit, white cherries, honeysuckle and herbs. Intense though not yet especially complex.

  • Day 3. Rich, sweet tropical aromas with good slate and mineral. Still quite decadent on the palate, but with plenty of lift and brightness to stay balanced.

  • Always a treat to drink Egon Müller though this bottle is a bit disappointing for the producer - it's very pretty, a clean and very fresh Riesling with little botrytis and plenty of ripe citrus and stone fruit, but doesn't have the intensity or depth that I would expect from Müller's Auslese. The signature green/minty elements I'd expect from Scharzhofberger are very muted and barely apparent at first - some of that does emerge with air, but it's a very restrained wine that right now doesn't show the aromatic depth or complexity I'd expect from Müller's Scharzhofberger.

  • #08-15, 8% abv. At least right now, this seems like it has the same lightness as the problematic 1990 -- it's suffering from a bit of reverse Prädikat creep. This is more like an opulent spätlese than an auslese. The nose is gentle and shows a bit of green apple and some other herbs. There is Saar minerality here but it is relatively subdued. The palate too is fairly gentle and balanced; and on the back end, this was initially kind of muted and dumb, but then with lots of oxygen, seemed to pick up the expected Saar rawness and became quite chewy. I think this won't ever end up as a great edition of this wine, but it's pretty delicious now and especially with a generous amount of air.
