First Hobbs Nathan Coombs. Hugely impressed. Only decanted for about 90 minutes and could possibly have done with a bit more. Great nose. Masses of mint and cedar. Very well balanced as one would expect with any Hobbs wine. Tannins very much in check and no sign of 15% alcohol. Another Hobbs triumph.

Deep purple color. Very aromatic with earth, mushrooms, black berries and licorice. Dry with medium acidity. Medium tannins. Good balance. Flavors of red plum, black cherry and asphalt. Very good.

Tasted at the Hobbs estate in Sonoma. I was not overly impressed with any of the Cabs served, and this was no different. Nothing jumped out at me in a “wow” sort of way, very reserved and closed in, with limited bouquet, finish, and flavour. Perhaps slightly hot in the finish, but nothing that threw me off. This wine possessed higher acidity and stronger tannins then the other wines tasted (Las Piedras, Dr. Crane, Napa Blend). I like fruit forward Napa Cabs, and this was definitely not one. Personally not recommended, especially due to its price.

Tasted at the Wally's Napa/Sonoma All-Stars tasting event. As soon as the doors opened, my friend and I rushed to taste the Dominus 2014. The 2014 Dominus was quite disappointing as it was closed and slightly hot like a $30 cab. But the bottle was just opened 30 mins prior so I can understand why.
So we were heading to the other room for the Opus 2013 when we stumbled by the Paul Hobbs booth, which had the hefty $400 price tag on the 2013 Nathan Coombs. An old man with a cowboy hat stood quiet holding the Nathan Coombs Estate bottle as if someone was going to steal it from him. We walked over cautiously and asked for a pour.
It might've been the smallest pour of the night, he eyeballed it so closely like it was a newly invented cocaine juice; it was probably half an ounce. As we swirled our glass, the color was just STAINING like pen ink, viscous. Sniff... whoa... we both looked at each other like you smell what I'm smelling? I put that 0.5oz sucker in my mouth and almost fainted. We both looked at each other again and said "WOOOOOOWWW..." I had to quickly hold on to a nearby table, as the finish kept lingering. The cowboy man stood quiet and continued to guard his bottle.
This was by far the best wine I tried that day and it was against some tough competition including but not limited to Dominus, Opus, Caymus, Quintessa, Ehlers, Silveroak, La Jota, Mayacamas, Vineyard 29. What made it so different was the finish. All the wines we tasted had a very tannic and almost bitter finish, as is common with young wines especially with the 2013 and 2014 vintages that were presented that day. This one was just extra smooth but also very powerful and 'toe-curling' at the same time. Will this wine age well? I have no doubts.
This probably has to be best wine I tried as of date.
Fabulous now with a 3-5 hour decant. 96 pts. I like how it has sediment in the bottle at a your age, paul hobbs seems to do that in most of his creations! Could be a 99 or 100 with time. Should age incredibly well. Probably best in 2030.
