  • More than anything this bottle struck me a really authentic wine. Fresh. Fully ripe but only just. Earthy. Good fruit. Some pleasant balsamic. Grippy tannin still. Quite serious. Not perfect for sure - the tannins particularly are a little drying on the gums - but totally real and honest wine from what is in Ferdinando's opinion the best vintage of the decade.
Next day - tannins less prominent, this is tasting really young.

  • A year since the previous bottle, discounting the corked one. Quite a dark color. Earthy nose with dark fruits behind following through on the palate. This lightened up in the glass and after 30 minutes seemed less weighty than at first, with the fruit showing more nuance. Finishes with a strong note of camphor and good persistence. Not for the uninitiated perhaps but will find fans among the die hard nebbiolo geeks since the wine faithfully reflects all that the variety is meant to represent. Authentic wine from beginning to end. At ten years the fruit now yielding a little in favor of the more savory earthy components. I would decant this an hour. But no hurry to drink this since the architecture of the wine is still fully present. My kind of Nebbiolo.

  • This was slightly corked. Not enough to stop us drinking it but obviously not showing well. Otherwise, seemed balanced with some tannic clout still.

  • There are few wine makers who I want to succeed more than Ferdinando Principiano. I think his work in the vineyard is not only astounding but involves him taking real risk. Over the years his cellar work has become more assured and his wines have settled into a certain place. I have always liked this wine. A few years on it is still full of interesting bright red fruit - quite ripe - commingled with more savory notes you expect from nebbiolo. Nicely structured, with some tannic grip taking up residence in the gums. The aromas are full of finesse, there is ripeness giving texture, then the back end asserts itself with vigor. In a perfect world the wine might have a little more length. Listed at 13.5% but I would have placed the alcohol higher. Faithfully and assuredly represents itself. Better with food, as I find to be the case with most Langhe Nebbiolo. Readers should know I tend to like my Langhe Nebbiolos with some age. I sacrifice the bloom of youth for a little more harmony. But this still has enough rigor to appeal to all palates. Could only be Italian. Fully ready now but will keep. It seems I may be the only person with any of this left. Bought on release.

  • D1h. Youngish red, red rim, 5. Fine clean fruity nose. The same goes for the palate, well balanced ha Inge some tannin, fruit in the finish. Drink now or wait for more complexity. The day after it was in fact more complex exhibiting floral elements on top of the fruit.
