Another tailgate wine, brought by GB, who has written disparaging notes onthis wine in the past. I kind of liked it. 87 means very good, and in the spectrum of all the plonk that gets sold, I think very good is a fair description. For those who complain that Zin is often port-like, this was definitely port-like. I commented that it had port flavor characteristics, and one of the guests at our tailgate, who had not heard my comment and knew nothing about the wine other than that it was red, immediately said "light port" when she tasted it. I have had non-port Touriga National wines and they have a flavor that is very much like the flavor of port, and this wine had that same flavor. There was red fruit, a bit of sweetness but not much, and a bit of leathery aging flavors. There was a meaty background and a lot of body. This was a good match for grilled skirt steak, Jambalaya, smoked brisket, jerk chicken and marinated pork tenderloins. You certainly do not want to drink aged burgs and Loire whites in this setting. Nor would you want to drink this wine with dover sole or Peking Duck.
This bottle seemed beyond the drinking window. Nose of alcohol, spice, camphor. Taste was more spice and camphor and a little fruit. I hope my other bottles are better, but this may be done.

As far as I can tell, these are done. Nothing but alchol and medicinal chemicals. I will let it breathe and try it again -- as a science experiment...
