An enticing nose of bacon fat, dark fruits, apricot and blossom. The palate is deep and rich. Creamy through the mid and underpinned by perfectly ripe tannins. There's some menthol and baked earth to the long finish. Starting to drink really well with plenty still left in the tank.

Tasted in one session against: 14 theorem, 15 The Standish, 18 andelmond, 15 lamella and a 19 cote rotie. Extremely complex nose of cfs, pepper, dark fruits all lifted by the viognier. Palate was complete long and full bodied. Spice, pepper, cinnamon black fruit. Easily the standout wine of the group.

Cracking wine right here, such purity of fruit and shows what can be done when the fruit and ok are not pushed to the limits. While it is plush and ripe, I still found it elegant and not a blockbuster. Loads of dark berry fruits, hints of tobacco, liquorice, black tea and some chary oak. Didn’t get much apricot type flavours from the viognier so it was not a distraction for me. The tannin structure and length on the finish are high class.

Made by the esteemed Dan Standish, these Barossa wines are in a class of their own in many ways for their serious take on South Australia’s great grape offering. Blackberry, blueberry pie…no real notes of apricot from the Viognier, but its lifted / lythe on the palate, intense…milk chocolate raspberry and mouth coating. The whole thing is embracing – sombre / serious / dense.
