Northern Rhone theme at Empire: Had a distinct savoury bacon note, a little rugged with rougher tannins compared to the Gilles alongside. Probably the most northern Rhone of northern Rhones of the flight, a no-frills Syrah for everyday drinking.

Mainly good white Burgs: Opened one last red to end off the night. Very classic northern Rhone, opulent blue fruit without being too modern. Has a lot more room to improve. Vines passed down from Faurie I believe.

Darnaud makes this wine from old vines (~1930s) given to him by Bernard Faurie. Serious wine, very dark and deep with mouthfilling cottony texture. Snappy and lightly floral nose, but on the palate it's all deep crushed black fruit and charred and rare meat. Dense, but still fresh. Tons of extract - serious tannins. It's just this side of stolid, but it pulls it off nonetheless. This is a real monster that needs time to come around.

Dark; supple, soft, plenty of summer red fruits. Flashy, yet well proportioned. Fully ready.
