  St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Vertical spanning 3 Decades (Merce's Castle): Under cork which crumbled upon opening. Garnet/browning in colour with quite a thick watery rim. Savoury on the nose. Soft, restrained on the palate with not much fruit to speak of. Thin was a comment from one observer. Medium finish but overall underwhelming. Definitely at the end of its life, probably drinking better a few years ago, and on the downward slope to oblivion. Drink up if you have any left in the cellar. Was the weakest bottle in the flight and overall vertical line-up.

  91-92. Really good place. Almost like a good Bordeaux. Dark fruits now softened and good secondary flavours coming in. Cigar box. Wood notes. Spice. Lovely.

  It's definitely near the end of its prime and needed some oxygen-time. Still a very smooth finish.
