  • Pinot Noir tasting (Hammers Weinkostbar, Berlin): Third of six

I could have sniffed this one until the cows come home! Deep Burgundy nose (I know, it's a Loire, and but it's a Vacheron!). Beguiling from start to finish.
I'm not good at identifying specific fruits, I just knew it smells like a great Burgundy. Think Gevrey-Chambertin, but a little lighter.

  • Drank four bottles over Christmas. With a ham (fine), with a white truffle risotto (excellent) and with Christmas turkey (good). I was surprised how much my enjoyment varied. But it really was jolly good. Smooth, mature, sophisticated but not showy. Look forward to the next couple of bottles. It does indeed remind one of a fine beaune, it has that elegance, but not the moreishness one craves.

  • Nice colour, quite full for a red Loire. Nicely integrated oak, floral notes, lovely elegant sweet cherry fruit, hints of gooseberry and peach; good weight, nive minerality, adequate acidity, good length. Remarkably the wine grows coarser and more monolithic very rapidly with air and then the wood dominates on the finish and gets rather dry. Good wine but drink up. Mirabile dictu the second bottle shows very well the next day and even comes close to a very good Côte de Beaune. Rating based on this second bottle, first one was 88.

  • Crumbs, there is some really classy fruit to this nose and definite sophistication to its mineral components. I’m pleased it doesn’t show the heat of the vintage, everything is in restrained harmony. When I’ve had this wine before I’ve thought I’d probably guess it as Premier Cru Pommard if I were tasting it blind; Peter has just proffered that as a guess so I cannot be completely bonkers in my analysis. There is an intriguing slightly green, slightly flinty character present which has more than a suggestion of white Sancerre aromas. Yum, now that is a tasty palate. It has a fine interplay between fruit and tannins, with a vivacious streak of acidity all of which work together to make this seem compellingly intricate as well as being engorged with charming fun value. Drinking very well now but there is certainly no rush.

  • Winery: Cigar, cassis notes; big red; dark berry, earthy, minerals; some dark spice.
