Community Tasting Notes (3) Avg Score: 92 points

  • The warmest of Meyer Nakels vineyards. They own 3 acres of vines in the Sonnenberg on a 30% slope. This was opened alngside a 2009 Faiveley Vouget Grand Cru and it showed better according t the tasters. Deep purple color. Rich notes of black fruit and wet earth with solid tannins. No rush to drink this bottle if you have any. Creamy and full bodied finish. 94 points.

  • Pop and pour. Drunk over several hours.

A complex, lovely nose with forest notes, wild berries, rhubarb, cola, spice and loamy herbal notes. It's midweighted and sappy on the palate, with more forest berries, spice, moss, and cola notes. It's deep and has an admirable level of finesse and cohesion with the sap and breadth beautifully balanced with its acidity. Quite long on the back end with more spice and a cooling herbal finish. This is drinking in the slot, and is a very impressive bottle of pinot. Full disclosure, I prefer a more red fruited expression of pinot, but this is outstanding in its mode. It's hard not to like this very well made wine. I have minimal experience with German Spatburgunder, much of which has been subpar, but his is lovely and worth seeking out. Well done!

  • A private lunch (Restaurant Hofgarten, Dernau, Germany): Fresh fruit on the nose (red cherries, cranberries), satiny texture, judicious smoky oak acts as a seasoning, transparent but with enough sweet roundness (14% ABV) to wrap the gentle tannins in, lovely mineral undertow, slightly drying on the finish, with a hint of granny smith. An attractive and well-made but not really harmonious GG, that would have benefited from a little more physiological ripeness. Drink soon, before its youthful charm fades.
