Hitting its stride now. Lovely new world wine, good showing for Shiraz, well integrated and polished. Telltale notes of olive or olive tapenade on the nose with hints of roasted meat over dark lush fruit. Bottle 288 of 4000. Recommended.

First tried this in 2006 and was unimpressed. At the time, quite vegetal with fruit subdued. What a difference 4 years makes. No formal notes taken this time, but served at a dinner party for 4 (braised ribs). Dark color, nice aromatics (absolutely no vegetal aspect) of dark fruit. On the palate, a beautifully balanced wine that one would swear came from a top Rhone producer. No Aussie or Cali fruit bomb here. Just a nice measure of dark and red fruit, spices, soft tannins and acid, all nicely balanced. Medium body, nice silky finish. This was bottle labeled 754 of 4,000.

(Niels Verburg Shiraz, Western Cape) This is the first vintage to include fruit from the Bot River property; the rest was sourced from Malmesbury (Swartland), Bottelary (Stellenbosch), and Helderburg. After fermentation and an additional 60 days of skin contact, the wine was matured in 25%-new oak (75% French, 25% American) for 12 months. Dark ruby-purple in color, it is intense and complex, smelling of violets, licorice, ripe strawberry and blueberry, smoked meat, and leather. As it broadens in the glass and on the palate, it displays an array of mocha, graphite, white pepper, paprika, cardamom, and dried plum, buoyed by pomegranate and hibiscus. (Luddite Wines Shiraz Niels Verburg) Black color with cherry meniscus; rich, spicy plum, caramel and complex berry, blackberry nose; complex, ripe but Rhone-like berry, mineral and black fruit palate; medium-plus finish 95+ pts.
(Luddite Wines Shiraz Niels Verburg) Roasted fruit and eggplant nose; odd entry with sharp notes, roasted fruit, cherry palate with some pepper and good acidity; medium finish

Had with tenderloin, grilled steak would have been better. Licorice, tobacco, dark fruits
