Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 90 points

  • Enjoyable, but not strong in character. Not much on the nose; not much heat (which certainly was nice); notes of tart cherry, a bit of plum, some bitter herbs on the finish. Over all, a bit of an odd duck, and maybe that's what it should go with, rather than the beef and veggies we ate. Not sure if it needs more time to really flourish, or if it is a bit past its best. Worth having drunk it, but we've certainly had better GSMs.

  • Day 1: Sweet profile up front with a little heat. Underneath black pepper, violets, underbrush and hot tamales. This is kind of a mess of a wine. Worth trying on a closeout at $20 but glad I did not pay full price. Hopefully day 2 will show some evolution. 84 points
Day 2: Nose is a bit better featuring black pepper, underbrush, floral and dark fruits. The palate still is struggling on this wine and is hot and that distracts from what is underneath that. Lacks acidity. Really not improving much and still remains at a disappointing 84.
Day 2.5: Put through a Vinturi. Better than before. Heat has dissipated and features Violets, crushed rock, strong spices, bramble and muted fruits. Still lacks acidity but more drinkable. Still not paying $20 for this though. 86 points
Day 3: Better with more distinctive fruit featuring plums and blackberries. Nice spices, violets and earth. Medium finish. 86 points
Recommendation: really not a buy for the price at $20.

  • CA Rhone Reds (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): 55% Syrah, 40% Mourvèdre, & 5% Grenache

    N: Closed; berries, earth

P: Med body; ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by some VERY slightly puckerish astringency which almost totally resolves by the LONG, VERY slightly faint, finish. Decent for now, though the finish troubles me. 91 pts WE [This vendor's $33.95 is slightly > 15% less than its nearest wine-searcher competitor.]

  • This was too fruit forward for me, along the lines of dark cherries. The sugar content was boderline. It did have good depth with decent tannins. Maybe with a few more years in the cellar the fruit would integrate more. My wife loved it though.

  • I'd have guessed chateauneuf blind. Lovely.
