Pretty translucent, quite developed and rather pale maroon-hued cherry red color with a brick-orange hue. The nose feels quite savory, phenolic and rather bretty with aromas of clay, some wizened dark berries, a little bit of burnt hair, light leathery tones, a hint of salt-cured game and a touch of farmhouse. The wine is moderately full-bodied, dry and savory on the palate with quite intense flavors of earth, meaty umami, some game, a little bit of dried cherries, a tart hint of lingonberries and a touch of phenolic spice. Overall the wine is quite light in the fruit department, emphasizing more those tertiary, savory non-fruit flavors. The wine is moderately high in acidity with firm medium-plus tannins. The finish is long, dry and quite funky with slightly bitter flavors of smoke, animal funk, some meaty umami, a little bit of leather, light bitter notes of sour cherries, a hint of savory wood spice and a touch of tart cranberry.

A pleasantly developed, complex and earthy Rioja Gran Reserva with a quite nicely bretty overall character - it's hard to say where the fruit ends, where the tertiary notes begin and which are the bretty tones. Although the wine has somewhat thinned and dried out with age, making the wine lacking some depth, the whole feels nicely integrated and this is a quite enjoyable and very complete old Rioja. Nothing transcendental, just a good little old Spanish red. Ridiculously great value at mere 2€.

  • the bottle I drank a few weeks ago was delicious, but this one was over the hill; I'll blame bottle variation
