Now approaching its 18th birthday, this wine has finally matured into an outstanding example of tweener (Sonoma/Napa) mountain Cab. There’s a perfumy, aromatic lift to the nose and damn this sucker will stain a glass. Those aromatics transfer to the palate where volcanic ash, glycerine and lively tannins dance on the tongue. Maybe it will take 20 years to peak but unfortunately for me, this is six of six. But I’m glad I got it now because if I didn’t catch it at the top I’m not sure how much further it has to go. Enjoy now with rewards. If you paid $150+ for this at a steakhouse I’m guessing you’d be pleased, if you’re the kind of person who pays $150 for a bottle of wine at a steakhouse.

Still very youthful, this wine had plenty of plummy fruit in a big package. A bit of cedar came out after an hour or so. My advice would be to give this wine another 5-10 years to see what develops.

16 years old and tastes magnificent. Opaque purple. Delicious aromas of cherry, blackberry, and black currant. In the mouth, refreshing acidity, strong undertow of rounded tannin, and amply concentrated. Near endless in the swallow. Scored 95 points when released, and merits a 95 now. The grapes come from a mountain top vineyard partly in Napa and partly in Sonoma. Flawless.

I think I'd drink these up today. Fine caressing tannins, blueberry, cracked pepper and leather notes with good, dark berry, underbrush and organic notes in the nose. I can't see an improving life, especially given the softening nature of the tannins. Perhaps a 91 but I think this faded a bit on opening.

Consistent with previous notes, and sadly, my last bottle. Still very compact but it evolves with air. Concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry fruit, mint, and savory herbs flow into red berries, chocolate, pipe tobacco, dried leather, and baked cherry pie. The finish brings refined tannins and lasts over a minute. To me, the only other Laurel Glen vintage that compares with this '04 was the '01, but that peaked 3-4 years ago. This one seems to be still on its ascent. Drink now - 2022 (but it will go much longer if you prefer that). Technical score: 95. Enjoyment score: 94.
