  • Pours dark, but comes off very well integrated for a 14. Meaty, with black pepper, olive, and blackberry fruit. We’re it not for the fullness on the midpalate, one would be more likely to guess Cornas. Perhaps that’s more the winemaker’s signature. If you like Dard et Ribo, this is head and shoulders better than their Crozes or St. Joseph.

  • Very much youthfully intense on the nose with ripe yet savory blackberry fruit, bouillon, ground black pepper and tones of red cherry. Has a somewhat natty feel but still speaks strongly of its origins. Bright and perfumed, no doubt. On the palate mouth-filling, grippy and markedly spicy. Not a huge wine but possesses a great tannin structure. Supremely elegant, tartly red-fruited with high acidity. A friend commented about an off-note in his final sips after the wine had been in the decanter for a few hours but I managed to miss it.

  • Dark, somewhat translucent black cherry color. Very fragrant and attractive nose with beguiling aromas of licorice, ripe black cherries, juicy blackberries, some sanguine iron tones, a little bit of smoky earth, a light touch of freshly ground peppercorns and a sweet, lifted hint of VA. The wine is dry, full-bodied and lively on the palate with juicy and super-crunchy flavors of sour cherries, very ripe blackberry-driven dark forest fruits, some tart cranberry tones, a little bit of peppery spice, light stemmy tones and a hint of game. Overall the wine feels beautifully pure and quite weightless for its size with great structure from the moderately high acidity and somewhat grippy and very firm tannins. The finish is very fresh and lengthy with quite pronounced tannic grip and juicy flavors of tart cranberries and lingonberries, sour cherry bitterness, some peppery spice, a little bit of brambly blackberry, light smoky tones, a hint of tart blackcurrant and a sappy, herbal touch of raspberry leaf tea and stemmy greenness.

A beautifully perfumed, rather tightly-knit and pure Hermitage that betrays the cooler 2014 vintage, yet not coming across as too light, soft or underripe in any way. The wine carries the power, concentration and ripeness of a Hermitage, but the cooler vintage lends some sense of weightlessness to the wine and lends a slightly herbal, sappy green edge to the flavors while only emphasizing the bright, crunchy and super-juicy style typical of Dard & Ribo. A fine Hermitage that might be a bit lighter than is typical, but still carrying all the structure and seriousness one expects from the appellation. Perhaps not for the long haul, but this still will benefit from many more years down in a cellar. A bit pricey for the style at 60€, but not prohibitively so.
