  • Very dark red color, 1mm clear edge. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 3 hours. 75% CS, 15% CF, 5% M, 5% PV. Ripe nose with black currants, raspberry, and wild cherry, with some woodsy notes, coarse ground tobacco and underbrush. The palate is medium-full bodied, satiny with tart black currants, dried tobacco leaf, dried earth, dusty minerality, tart cherry with fine tannins. Probably at peak.

  • Ric's wine. Splash decant, very tasty cabernet with flavors of licorice, cassis, tobacco and earth, hints of oak and vanilla show on the finish. Has the legs to push another 6-7 years easy. Drink now - 2029+.

  • Deep garnet hue, 1mm clear meniscus. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. 75% CS, 15% CF, 5% M, 5% PV. Ripe black currants and black raspberry, dark chocolate, with subtle veins of boysenberry, fresh cut wood, a touch of green, and supple ground tobacco and hints of dried spearmint. The palate is quite nice, tart dark fruits consistent with the nose, dried tobacco leaf, spices, medium plus body with a velvety texture and polished tannins. This really evolves over an hour aand the dustiness emerges too. 90+ to 91pts.

  • 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon - Inglenook 2014

I seem to have a thing for yearly wineries. To be clear, I’m talking wineries named after years; just this past Tuesday 1984, or just 84, the joint project of Elias Fernandez and Doug Shafer, and the Albariño they produce and now 1882; a newer label created by Niebaum Estate and Inglenook and their Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage 2014.

A blend of75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cab Franc, 5% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot from the Rutherford AVA and aged 18 months in 95% French & 5% American Oak, of which 10% is new oak.

I happened to pick this wine as I was meandering among the shelves of a local wine shop and spotted the all too familiar and highly desirable “SALE” sticker, telling me that the wine was an astounding 50% off! Honestly, I haven’t bought an Inglenook, Niebaum, or Coppola wine for many many years and maybe only glanced at their flagship wine, Rubicon, on occasion. I did have the opportunity to buy the Inglenook Cask Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 while the wine buyer at the wine shop after seeing some great reviews.

At half off and with the possibility that this purchase could present me with a great wine for a mere $20, I had to take the chance.

Overall, I did enjoy the wine. Wafting up from my glass were notes of dark dried cherry, leading to similar flavors along with a slight herbal touch and a hint of acid, softer tannins (restrained oak aging) brought the wine to a medium-bodied finish that was somewhat one dimensional, although over time the wine did start to display some brighter fruit. This is a wine for those of you that look for drier characteristics, maybe bordering on a Bordeaux style.

Interestingly, back in 1985, while on my Honeymoon to a woman now my ex, we visited the Inglenook Estate. One of only a few larger venues, but at the time was still recognizable as a late-nineteenth-century Chateau ensconced with only some of Coppola’s Hollywood iconography.

    Cheers
