This "unexpectedly" combines the traits of Cab and Syrah, as it delivers abundant blackberry and black pepper of the latter in the framing of fine tannins and cassis of the former all in a generous oaky package. The fruit is intense and borderline sweet, but the cab tannins need more time to resolve as does the oak influence.

Decanted and aerated a day before. Dark purplish garnet, medium plus bodied. Nose and palate of dark berries like blackcurrant, blueberry, black pepper, clove, plus slight hints of butter, oak. Quite tannic, bitter mid-palate without which the wine would taste much better. Maybe it needs 2 more years.

A blend of 52% Cabernet-Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz, from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, Padthaway and Coonawarra, aged for 12 months in (almost exclusively older) French and American oak, 14.5% ABV. Ripe fruit on the impressive nose (mulberries, plums), roast beef and warm spices, iris, hints of black tea and fruity black pepper, good depth; the palate is juicy but still tight, youthful and vibrant but without any jarring austerity, substantial (14.5% ABV) but energetic, with slatey minerality, ripe but firm acidity and richly textured tannins; complete and velvety finish, plums and white chocolate, very good length. Drinks well from the decanter already after two hours or so; should be at its best from 2018-2024. By its very nature not a wine with a very distinctive individuality, but the complexity and depth achieved by flawless wine making and expert blending are impressive. Looking at other tasting notes, I get the impression that this is much better than both the 2011 and 2012 were at this stage.
