  • Poured into a decanter to remove sediment; drank right after decanting.

Initially on the nose, I'm greeted by plums and black cherries. Next a bit of earthiness, like forest floor in autumn, leather and tobacco.

On the palate, the fruitiness comes across first - sharp red cherries. Then the leather, tobacco, and a touch of woodiness. The fruit goes darker towards the finish, which lingers on for a good 60 secomds or more with plums and dry wood spice. Acidity is medium, and the tannins are surprisingly grippy given the age of the bottle. Going back to smell after taking a sip, the fruit smells are less pervasive, and there is a lovely cedar aroma that appears.

Overall, a delicious Brunello that is still alive, with a nice balance of fruit, wood flavors, and tannins.

  • This is a real cellar treasure, the first Brunello that made Italy click for me 14 years ago. Opening the second bottle was even more satisfying. Cherry and plum notes with leather mineral and spice. A lot going on. Long grippy finish for a 21 year old wine.

Drinking at peak now, should persist for at least another five years.

  • Slow oxed then into a decanter for 2 hours. Perfect expression of a well aged Brunello. This is exactly why we age wines. Dark in the glass with incredible legs. Smells like cherries, hay, red berries and earth. Wow. It went down with the cheese course like a perfect marriage. Tonight no rush to finish my case. Sad that only 2 left. Nothing more you could ask for from a 19 year old wine. Excellent.

  • A PnP, with the winemaker and his wife at their home. It was only a few weeks prior that I'd had Marco's first Brunello, the 1997 - it was what led me to visit them, the wine speaking to me, if you will. And while the '97 is fully mature, with some good years still ahead, this has yet to reach peek maturity. That said, it's approaching that day, and in the meantime what we have is a powerful, yet balanced wine full of nuance that only comes out with enough air. An impressive wine, and one which promises even more if you've got the patience. Insofar as it'll cellar for another decade no problem, it's also very good right now - I suppose it comes down to what you like. The 2010 is currently offered at just $65, which makes this wine (in general) an unbelievably good value. recommended+

Served non-blind; cool, and elegant, with some youthful muscle still unresolved.

(LA RASINA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO IL DIVASCO) #2; COLOR-dark, nice; NOSE-very floral (lilacs, rose pedals), little chocolate, heavy vanilla, Starbucks; TASTE-massive, absolutely explodes in your mouth, HUGE rich mouth feel, blackberry jam exploding in your mouth, very structured and complex, serious juice, nice acidity, great complexity on the long finish, charismatic, slightly New World Brunello, will last for 15-20 years; WS-96; GV-94
