I have been following this under the radar wine for over 5 years and it just gets getting better and better. Very purple in the glass with long legs. Well integrated tannins that are now tame, very well made wine that is full-flavored and very bold yet refined and restrained -- a perfect combo! Blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit, rich and mineral-driven, very long finish. This is hard to describe but it is oh so good and drinking great right now.
I might increase the rating after I finish up the bottle tonight.
Decanted for 2 hours and this big wine was not ready. It was slightly bitter and had a musty smell and I was worried. In the decanter it went and I checked back in 4 more hours after seeing a movie; 6 total. What a difference time and air can do to a wine! Very dark purple to the rim with matching fruit. Nice smell and a really unique and nice taste initially, mid-palate and on the finish. This is a big bold wine with tannins that obviously have not integrated just yet and it will get better with time. It needs 2-3 years but you can certainly tell what it will be like in the future. This is typical old school Philippe Melka and for people liking fruity up front sweeter wines, this is not for you. For folks who like big bold wines with strong tannins, a long finish, Melka's signature style and the St. Helena AVA, this is for you. I also liked following the journey and evolution with this wine over the course of 7 hours and can't wait to finish it up tonight!
