Remarkably youthful for how I'd expect a '98 to be drinking now; a core of pale, fresh Riesling fruit augmented by mineral and faint smoky elements, though still coming across quite undeveloped. There's good balance here, bright acids keeping it very precise and it finishes long and completely dry.

Golden hue. Melon, vanilla and key lime pie nose. Minerality cuts underneath. Mature Riesling with big flavor impact. Rich yet austere, there is good follow through. (88)

Pleasant light gold color, which my mother in law says looks like urine... which it will become pretty soon anyway. On the nose, somewhat restrained but shows lemon drop candy, stones, and something savory (tarragon?) Fairly intense and medium bodied in the mouth with candied lemon flavors and a wonderful saltiness, which rather quickly scoots off to a citrus and mineral-tinged finish. Overall, very nice. Wish I'd bought more. Seems capable of developing more of that stony/savory character over the next ten years.

Golden yellow in color. Medium bodied. Round mouth-feel. Nice acidity but not overly crisp. Honey and apricots with a touch of minerality on the palate. Nice wine. Too bad it was our only bottle. Paired nicely with sushi for Valentine's Day.

Alsace: The Alsatian Gourmet (Lay & Wheeler, Colchester): Wow! What a nose! Fantastic. Full & fresh nose - with a big touch of smoked haddock. Lovely attack. Oily, rich, quite fat. Very satisfying. Complex, full and generally excellent.
