  Entirely consistent with my previous note. Interestingly, this has a short cork and plastic covering (perhaps re-bottled). Cork had Fontanafredda stamp but no vintage indication. Masses of hard port-like sediment, the wine needed to be stood upright for a couple of days before serving.

  Opened up with only 30mins in a glass, and improved significantly with 2hrs as a rotten leaves note became a sweet rich ball of tar, liquorice, fennel and herbs. Massive back-palate and expansive finish which lasts almost 45 seconds. Very dark and completely opaque - reminds me most of an old Elio Grasso Runcot but with added herbs and sweetness. Think tar more than red fruit. Only shame is that the nose is very muted and comes nowhere near matching the palate. Old Fontanafredda is knock-out value and this is another fantastic wine with another 20yrs ageing potential easily. At peak now, but needs rich meat. The riserva is even better! 94pts
