  • Over the hill. Very brown. Oxidized and sweet as could be.

  • Winebar [4 Whites, 6 Reds, & 5 *shared* Reds] from 07/27/18 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): "Spiegel lies on sandy-clay and faces east. It stretches out halfway up the slope between Guebwiller and Bergholtz at an altitude of 260 to 315 meters. The grapes are hand-picked and whole bunches are pressed. There is static settling of the lees. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled tuns, followed by raising on the less for 8 months." 16.5 grs/l R.S. & 3.93 grs/l T.A.

N: An earthy "oiliness", rest tough to parse; Intensity lurking?

P: Med, poss MF, body; Very RNDISH entry with SWTISH frt (definite R.S.) subtly balanced by acidity which transitions into a LONG, tangy/swt finish which falls off at the very end into kind of a plodding very, VERY slight bitterness. 13.5% ABV; My VG+/EXC- (& I'm basically disregarding the VERY end as I *suspect* it may even be an asset with food). 92 pts WE @ $29, 91 WS, 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson, & 16/20 La Revue du Vin de France. [I didn't see another U.S. source with which to compare this vendor's $24.95.]

P.S. I thought http://www.1winedude.com/cheap-tricks-domaines-schlumberger-recent-releases/ does an admirable job of explaining WHY this producer is able to keep its Grand Cru prices low.

  • The colour is a nice lemon yellow, average to high intensity. The nose is pleasant with good intensity, dominant of floral scents and acacia honey, completed with yellow fruits like quince and golden apple. Alcohol support is full-bodied.
The range of aromas is similar to that of the nose. Complex, one can note yellow fruit, Mirabelle plum, quince, golden apple and under the surface, liquorice and acacia honey. The finish has a beautiful length.
