Winemaker's Lunch with Sami Ghosn of Massaya, The Spectator Boardroom, London. I don't like aniseed so this should have been a no-go end of meal tipple - but I was persuaded to give it a try and I'm glad I did. The core spirit is initially slightly off-dry and very mildly liquorice, but the predominant spice on the tongue is much more like dried cumin and fennel seed that gives it an almost savoury aspect and prevents any cloying. A smooth, beautifully balanced artisanal spirit - and I suspect dangerously moorish. Will get a bottle on the back of order for some of the noted Massaya Colombier 2013.
