  • I know this isn't proper Barolo or Barbaresco, but I'd still expect more from a 1985 Gaja Nebbiolo. The wine lacks the floral notes I look for in Piedmont--I'd have guessed a mature, middling Sangiovese based on its sour cherry fruit and earthy elements. It's a bit thin, and lacks the stuffing to improve further with age, although its acid will certainly keep it alive.

  • At first, red fruited and minty, very generic old wine flavors, dilute and drying out. Not good at all, and impossible to identify as nebbiolo. With air it fleshes out, showing red cherry fruit and some earthy/mushroomy character that reminds me more of sangiovese than nebbiolo. There's a fair amount of fine, drying tannin here that is likely going to outlive the fruit, this seems on the downslope to me. A decent drink after aeration, but it never becomes especially interesting or complex.
