Nearing end of life... Light syrah and soft on the edges... Good right at pour and needs to sit on palate to show remaining signs of life despite strong seal at cork.

Two different bottles, two different results. One was devastatingly awesome, probably a good 94 if I'm scoring separately. The other was not as great, but still exrtremely nice and likely better if it hadn't had to stand up to the first. The main difference was the tannins... same/similar nose on both bottles but a distinctly different level of tannins, with the second bottle being a little "younger" and less velvety on the finish than the other. Both corks held strong with similar lines on them and little-to-no seepage and similar fill levels. Both wines are good to drink and still have years, but the one that was "ready" was truly outstanding.

Superbly refined wine. Without a doubt, these three Kongsgaard Syrahs (1998-2000) could pass for a bit, rich, younger Pinot. Dark red color. Aromatic nose of black berry fruit, minerals, and tremendous earthiness. This wasn't showing a pepper or meaty note that one might expect. In the mouth, tremendous balance and purity, with a refinement about the fruit. The texture was finely knit, lighter than one sees in most California Syrah, with earthy undertones and a long finish. A-/A

One of 9 wines tasted at our syrah/zin OL at Lucio's. Tied for my WOTN, which I believe was a sentiment shared by others at the table. Beautiful floral notes on the nose with blackberries and cherries on the palate. Smooth and solid wine all around.
