A small gathering of friends - 71 Cristal, 08 Dom, 90 DRC GE, 01 Rayas, 90 Monfortino and etc. (Officina - Washington D.C.): Delicious expressive nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, sour apple candy, pineapple, Coche flint, vanilla/oak, sesame, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered generous yellow fruit, opulent and round, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long perfect ripe yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of sour apple candy, flint and vanilla at the end. Although nicely balanced, delicious and obviously less ABV, it resembles a Californian chardonnay a bit. Really delicious but certainly not worth the current auction price.

Another winner. Clear yellow, light green hues; green apples, touch of new French oak still there (baking spice, cinnamon, pie crust), fresh apple tart, peach tart, lemon cake, zippy, chalky, vibrant, long. Heritage Auction Blind Tasting at Jean-Georges Vegas.

For a wine without too much complexity, the most notable is how very much Coche style it represents. Lots of smoke, almost ripe yellow fruit, saline, bitter, earth (a truffle smell), pistachio, a hint of heat, traces of chamomile and jasmine. Lean on the palate, straightforward and not too complex. Something very close to a premier cru were there to be a bit more power and depth; the nose is close enough. Feels like drinking from the barrel. 91+

Interestingly, this wine kind of got lost in our superb lineup. In other contexts it would have been a hit, but it lacked the wow factor we were long on last night.
