Two Months in Roma; 9/6/2022-10/28/2022 (Rome, Italy): From the wine list at Il Goccetto, served with a salumi and cheese plate. Straw color with a floral lifted nose. Full body, with a nice balance of acidic tanginess and golden fruit. Long lingering finish. Enjoyed trying one of these with a bit of age - I don’t rate but if I did this would be more in the 92/93 range.

Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. 100% Verdicchio. Clear, bright, medium (+) lemon in color with a greenish core and slight golden hue. The nose is clean but intense, with notes of green apple, lemon, lime zest, white flowers, ginger, petrol, flint and wet stone. It is reminiscent of a Clare Valley or Mosel Riesling on the nose, although the petrol and flint dissipate after the wine opens up. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity and high alcohol (14%), which however seems a little lower. This is a complex, full-bodied, intensely flavored white, with a pronounced, slightly bitter mineral note on the long finish. This is one of the first Verdicchios that I have had with some age on it and it confirms the potential longevity of this variety. It has upside potential over the next 3-4 years if you favor a profile that is a cross between a dry aged Riesling and an unoaked Viognier. This really makes me want to try their Riserva DOCG.

Blind, cat pee, sulfur, smoke ending on the bitter side. Not my style. Drink now. Price was $23 CAD I believe.
