Wine dinner with great friends. Schrader LPV 2015, Wallis Estate 2019, Barbour 2015, Arkenstone 2018. Schrader and Wallis were the consensus favorites although Celia Welsh's Barbour was close behind.
All in all a solid lineup and I am sure that I will be suffering tomorrow. That's okay -- it will make me remember the night.

Dark cherry, strawberry, cassis, dried roses, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, classic Napa style, great purity and balance. Similar in style to other Schrader, although not as profound as the best of the best. I’d still drink this any day.

I usually don't add a tasting note for my wines but as someone who has been a Schrader member for years, I have to say this was the most disappointing bottle I have had from them. A lot of minerality and no depth. This was after a six hour decant. Everyone in our group have at least three bottles a year from this producer and agreed this was the most lacking we ever had.

A touch more fruit driven expression of Las Piedras with the minerality coming through on the finish. Layers and layers of sweet black, purple and dark red fruits with notes of sage and lavender. The sweetness of fruit allows for the LPV to drink extremely well young, yet the underlying structure will allow for long aging.

Mike Smith Tasting and Wine Dinner PART #2: Better than the 2014 Schrader LPV and 2014 Colesworthy, but it couldn’t catch up to the 2015 Colesworthy (likely by design). However, the conversation amongst the Schraders became somewhat irrelevant, as they were all left in the dust by the two Carter LPVs (2014 and 2015 Verdad). The 2015 Schrader LPV had a thinner mid-palate (though less “watery” than the 2014 Schrader LPV), with a finish that ran a bit too short given what this wine is supposed to be. The overall delivery was good (as in “94-ish points” good), but there was certainly nothing iconic about this wine.
Knock off about $100 a bottle on this wine and maybe there’s a better conversation to be had. But at $225+? Rough…
