A delicious wine that reaffirmed why I love mature Burgundy, even though it was Jadot? None of the old closet notes one sometimes gets with old wine. Translucent ruby with very little sedimentation. Very clean nose, sweet with no tertiary notes. Pure and piercing strawberry fruit on the palate, very round. Graceful, balanced.

Burgundy, Barolo Dinner @ BRERA, Los Angeles (Officine BRERA): This was a seamless wine, at the beginning of its plateau. Fresh, pure, and near peak, with gorgeous dark red fruit, spice, and the brooding complexity of Musigny. Served after two 66' GC's (Faiveley Beze, Leroy Chapelle), this was a candidate for WOTN along with the 66' Faiveley, though may fall just short of it as the Faiveley seemed a bit more singular and memorable. Paired with Black and White Truffle Risotto, this was my favorite pairing of the night, and maybe of all time for me.

Les Grands Jours - lunches and dinners between tastings; 3/18/2012-3/22/2012 (Burgundy): Alluring aromas of cooked mushroom, mature red cherry and cherry pie, all of which continue on to the palate. This wine has sensationally balanced structure and balance, with great minerality and soft tannins that helped provide great charm, mouth feel and nuance, even without lots of power. Somewhat more advanced than another bottle opened several years ago in the US. Thank you to our friends at Maison Jadot for reaching deep into the cellar tonight!

Paired with the 85 Jadot Musigny. There was some debate which was better the Musigny or the Bonnes Mares. I preferred the Musigny, but both showed real well. Both bottles are in a good place right now with well integrated tannins and a floral nose and good spice. A mixture of read and dark fruit on the palate.

Saturday afternoon: Huge surprise on the upside. Lacked a bit of sophistication, but very good.
