After it was all said and done, quite a decent bottle. The cork was soft, but still intact. There was the reassuring "pop". My very first sip suggested that it might be corked or turned or whatever. Recalling a CT Forum discussion of using plastic wrap to reduce/eliminate corked taste, I poured a little over some plastic wrap (Glad wrap to be specific), and whatever problem existed was reduced immediately and eventually gone. I then decanted the bottle (with some Glad wrap in the decanter), let that mingle for a while, and then let it breathe for about an hour or so. Delicious after all this. Tannins perfectly in check, fruit not prominent, but well-integrated. A Haut-Medoc in its prime. I can't imagine that any more time will improve this wine. I have one more, and I will be drinking it within the year.
Unfortunately, I did not (foolishly, because it would have been easy) save any wine to see what it tasted like without the Glad wrap soaking. The improvement I noticed might simply have been the change that occurs when a nearly 20 year old bottle is first opened to the air. Next time, I will be more careful.

Very attractive with its liberal dose of ripe Merlot; a lovely drink today.
