  • Dark ruby in color, long legs, 14.5% ABV. On the nose, plums, blackberry jam, raisins, white pepper, cocoa. Nice acidity, medium tannins, blackberries, black currants, cloves, tobacco leaves, cocoa. Well balanced and more layered that I would have expected, it showed a nice, medium long ending with spice, eucalyptus, and Cedar wood notes.

A better than expected wine - aging quite well and drinking quite nicely now. I would not wait more than 1-2 years to pop as I think it’s nearing peak - but there is definitely no rush to open it either as I think that a well-stores bottle will last a decade or more without de lining in quality.

  • Happy Birthday

As much as I joke about my age, and I do so as I might cry if I stop and think about it, I am pleased to know that the winery whose wine I am reviewing is slightly older than I am. Arriving at its 327th birthday on March 12th. I can safely say it has me beat! Happy Birthday!

I am, unfortunately, older than when the winery, which was purchased in 1977 by Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht and now tended by their son, Jean Engelbrecht, the Proprietor of the estate.

Exclusively producing red wines, the wine I tasted was proof of their commitment to quality.

Made using 100% Cabernet grapes from their vineyards from the Stellenbosch region in South Africa, the wine undergoes primary fermentation and maceration with malolactic fermentation taking place in barrels. It is matured for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels, 33% new, with another 4 months in bottle before release.

The wine is big and dense, yet still brimming with bright dark blue and black fruit, there is a hint of plum for richness. The time in the bottle since release has smoothed the tannins leading to a refined yet still crisp spiced finish. This is a wine that should keep for many more years (hoping I can say the same about myself) but it is well into drinking now.

    Cheers

  • This is a reliable and consistent wine at a fairly reasonable price point. I was introduced to this wine at least 15 years ago at a restaurant in Maine. Since than I have looked for it in restaurants and the occasional retailer who might be carrying it. The wine has never disappointed. The color is dark red, there is a mild bouquet. The wine is nicely balanced between fruit and tannin. It is fine alone or with most meat dishes. At home my wife and I have the habit of ignoring the traditional pairings and choose the wine for the evening independent of what we are eating. Thus I have had this wine with grilled fish and it goes well with that also.
