100% Carignan (samso) sourced from 100 year old vines in Monstat, Spain, 15% ABV, not mevushal. Appearance was a deep, opaque ruby with moderate to heavy viscosity. Nose was somewhat closed and subdued, with low to medium intensity, notes of red fruits, red plum, cranberries, pomegranate, black olives, star anise, tomato leaf, cured meats, tobacco leaf, baking spices, and cedar. On the palate it is tight, full bodied, dense extracted fruit, with firm leathery tannins and medium-plus acidity. Cassis, black raspberry, black olives, sour cherry, loamy dirt, graphite, cigar smoke, tobacco, woody oak. Finish is long and tannic with a touch of extracted fruit. Somewhat approachable now, but the firm tannins could benefit from a few more years of cellaring, which should open up the wine further. 92-93.
