  • Decent bottle of wine. Well past it's prime, this one is on me because I probably waited to long to drink it.

  • I enjoyed this wine quite a bit. It is my first experience with the Monica grape and I was surprised by how full bodied it was (it is a medium to full bodied wine). The nose is understated at best but with a pleasant mix of spice and mustiness. There are lots of blackberry and plum flavors and a hint of spice on the rather short finish. A good sipping wine, and even better with food that balances some of the lean finish. Tannins still somewhat tight on the finish, surprising after so much time in the bottle for a 10-12 dollar wine. I would guess that more age would just sap the fruit that is left though. I tried it with some nice parmesan I had and that cut the tannin very nicely but overpowered the wine a little bit, a milder cheese would probably really make the wine come alive though.

  • I like this wine very much. I'll agree with other posters--a bit short on the finish--but it's got lovely fruit, licorice notes, with herby briskness and a stony, mineral superstructure that altogether make me think of sun-drenched slopes and make it a great wine with food. It's not a showoff-and-sip-with-your-geek-friends wine; it's a quench-your-thirst-with-deliciousness wine, the kind of thing you have with spicy chili, maybe. Which is what I did.

  • Intense red fruit and floral aroma. Spicy cherries and plums palate, long juicy finish. Live acidity, moderate tannins.

  • This bottle of wine was a stark contrast to the Anima Negra (Callet based) bottle we had the previous night, and that contrast showed me what people mean by 'round, full' wines (vs. 'lean' wines like AN/2). Medium-bodied, with a distinct blackberry aroma, lots of plummy fruit, very soft tannins, and a tiny bit of spice from the Monica grape (which appears to be grown exclusively on Sardinia) on the short to medium length finish. While not as distinctive and unique as the Anima Negra product, this wine complements a wider variety of meals and is certainly more mouth-filling. Its food-friendly profile reminded me of the Penfolds Bin 389 which my father shared with us some weeks ago.
