  2015 Wegeler Geisenheimer Rothenberg Auslese was ripe, generous and mineral-driven. The Rheingau Auslese Riesling was clear and pale gold in colour, with expressive aromatics of apricot, honey, ginger spices and lanolin. There were intriguing notes of smokiness and salinity underneath.
  
  It was lusciously sweet and full-bodied, in harmony with the high level of piquant acidity. Saline linearity built on the mid-palate, and evolved into preserved tangerine, lemon candy and subtle spices in a long generous finish. The alcohol content was at 7.5%. It was better enjoyed in a narrow white wine glass than a tiny dessert wine glass to appreciate its complex aromas.
  
  The Riesling vines were planted on south-facing slope of Rothenberg, of which six hectares were recognized as VDP Grosse Lage. The soil was rich in red slates, which might explain the smokiness and mineral tension in the wine.
