Four hour decant. Lovely good blue and purple fruit. Still a bit of oak influence in the finish but becoming nicely integrated. Structured but not tough, and not impacting the lovely fruit. Might be starting to get into a nice open spot with significant air.

Bedrock syrahs at Bazaar Meat (Chicago, IL): A little blocky and unexpressive tonight, though there's no mistaking that this is indeed syrah. Just kind of structural without giving much pleasure on the palate, and clearly overshadowed by its more expressive peers. I'm guessing more time will yield better results.

Consumed over 3 days, stored in Somm-du-Vin, note from day 3. Appearance: Clear, deep ruby. Nose: Clean, medium intensity with aromas of a melange of red, blue, and black fruit with black pepper and spice. Palate: Dry, medium acid and tannin, medium intensity, medium+ body, 14.4% abv with the fruit dulled considerably on day 3 versus day 1, along with persistent spice and pepper notes and a medium+ finish. This was a 91-92 on day one but faded noticeably by day 3. At or near peak, drink now or over next 2-3 years.

Delicious but fairly tight, we popped and poured but the wine was improving continuously all evening. Decant if you drink now, or hold for several more years. Really nice Syrah.

Another reminder that virtually everything Bedrock makes is damn good wine and damn good value. This has the hallmarks of a good northern Rhone with just touch of extra ripeness to give away the fact that it’s a CA wine. But it’s not overdone in any way, and just makes you think this is probably where N Rhone is headed with climate change…
