  • 2012 Shane Syrah The Unknown

Consumed over two days (stored in Somm du Vin), note from day two. Appearance: Clear, medium ruby-garnet extending to the perimeter where a thin line of edge bricking is apparent. Nose: Clean, medium+ with developed aromas of dried fruit - black cherry & blueberry, black olive, mushroom, bacon fat, and violet - quite complex and interesting. Palate: Dry, medium acid, medium tannin is soft and round, medium+ body, medium+ intensity, 14.2% abv with developed flavors of dried dark fruit, black olive, and white pepper with a medium+ finish.

    Balance: Excellent
    Length: Excellent
    Intensity: Excellent
    Complexity: Excellent-Outstanding

This is in its perfect place right now. Showing tertiary characteristics - soft rounded tannins, dried fruit, and mushroom but still has a solid acidic backbone and fruit vibrancy. Wonderful wine - drink'em now if you still have any.

  • 2016 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

PnP, consumed over 3 hours. Appearance: Clear, medium ruby-garnet with light edge browning. Nose: Clean, medium intensity with developed aromas of dried cherry, leather. tobacco, cola, and ice tea. Palate: Dry, medium acid, medium- tannin, medium body, medium intensity, 13.4% abv with developing flavors of black cherry, cola, and ice tea with a medium+ finish.

    Balance: Excellent
    Length: Excellent
    Intensity: Very Good
    Complexity: Very Good-Excellent

By appearance and nose this gave indications of advanced age but feels like its still developing on the palate. Shows excellent balance and length this evening. Drink now or over next 1-2 years.

  • 1997 Giovanni Corino Barolo Vigna Giachini

Purchased in 2012, stood up and slow oxed for 3 hours at cellar temp. Appearance: Clear, medium garnet nearly to the rim with a thin circumference of bricking. Nose: Clean, medium intensity with developed aromas of dried cherry, tar, balsamic, soy, leather, and tobacco - subtle, but complex. Palate: Dry, medium acid, medium+ tannin is soft and very well integrated, medium body, medium intensity, 14.0% abv with developed flavors of dried cherry, balsamic, leather, and tobacco with a medium+ finish.

    Balance: Excellent-Outstanding
    Length: Excellent
    Intensity: Very Good-Excellent
    Complexity: Excellent-Outstanding

This is a wow wine. It has passed its peak but is still remarkable. It is very much still alive and somewhat limited in intensity but is showing exceptional balance and complexity. The balance between the primary, secondary, and tertiary characteristics is outstanding. This is one of those rare homeruns with a 25+ year old wine. Drink now or over next 1-2 years.
