  • 13,5% alcohol - pretty high for a Feinherb.

Pale appley yellow color. At first the nose is bold and powerful, but also quite odd with aromas of fermenting stone fruits, some sappy greenness and a hint of plastic - not many favorable comments flying around in the tasting. However, I let the wine wait and slowly the nose clears up, revealing rich and sweet notes of honey, some dried stone fruits and hints of nuttiness and exotic spices. The wine is surprisingly full-bodied, concentrated and even rather unctuous on the palate with a hint of residual sugar that makes the wine come across as dry-ish to off-dry. At first the flavors are rather weird and somewhat plastic, like the nose, but this character clears slowly up, revealing flavors of piercing steely minerality, lemon marmalade, some wildhoney, a little bit of exotic spices, a hint of saline tang and a touch of apple purée. Somehow the acidity feels quite a bit lower than year ago, making the wine come across as only medium-to-moderately high in acidity. The finish is quite long, rich and spicy with flavors of exotic spices, spicy red apples, steely minerality, some beeswax, a little bit of dried peaches and a hint of exotic fruits like mango and papaya.

A big, rich and voluptuous Riesling, but unfortunately does not show as beautifully as year ago - there was some discussion whether the wine was reductive or if this was a slightly off bottle, but no consensus was ever reached. This was still a very lovely and impressively voluminous effort for a Spätlese, but knowing how stunning this wine can be, this didn't reach the heights it should've. If this wine shows the direction this wine is taking with age, I'm not so sure whether it will actually hold a decade more as I guessed year ago. Nevertheless, solid value at 21,25€.

  • 13,5% alcohol - pretty high for a Feinherb.

Pale appley yellow color. Concentrated, bold and powerful nose with intense, very aromatic and somewhat developed aromas of peach, developed dried yellow fruit character, spicy wildhoney, some almond-driven nuttiness, a little bit of petrol and a hint of caramel. The nose feels very ripe and there's really a lot of everything happening here. On the palate the wine feels almost atypically big, voluptuous and concentrated for a Mosel Riesling, yet also impressively structured with very high - almost racy - acidity. There are very ripe and intense flavors of honey, lemony citrus fruits, sweet honeydew melon, a little bit of apple jam, a hint of saline minerality and a touch of petrol. The residual sugar lends an oily touch to the mouthfeel and boosts the fruity flavors, but still the wine doesn't come across as particularly sweet, only very powerful, even somewhat heavy. The finish is very ripe, rich and intense with succulent flavors of honey, mango, honeydew melon, dried pineapple, some lemon marmalade and a subtle touch of petrol.

Holy jebus, this is a massive powerhouse of a Riesling, very atypically big and concentrated for one from Mosel. However, unlike so many monolithic Rieslings, this wine doesn't come across as heavily alcoholic, flabby or ponderous, but instead incredibly intense, powerful and exceptionally focused. The wine is obviously very ripe, yet it has retained incredibly high acidity for such a big wine, keeping the structure well together. The wine isn't particularly fresh or playful, but instead dead-serious and very muscular. It is an experience to drink it now, but most of all the wine seems to be about aging potential - although starting to show the first signs of age, this is still a rather young wine and far away from its plateau of maturity. A rewarding wine now, but even more so after a decade. Stunning value at 25€.
