  • The two of us were split on this one: one person's unidimensional was another person's lovely aromas and tasty fruits. Both agreed that it was a nice break from the streak of overwrought wines we've hit lately. Oh yeah, and we loved the price. Nice to drink when we're not up to the flagship wine.

  • Dark garnet. Pungent herbs (sage, oregano) and cumin-dominant spices, as well as some pasilla chile make for an interesting first impression. There's also some charred notes here but the fruit itself is ripe in a fresh way. Decently rich, this at first seems flat and dull, but sneaky acids and smoky flavors come to the rescue momentarily, before a harshly acidic/tannic/metallic finish wraps things up. Interesting, yes; pleasureable, not so much.

  • 90% merlot, 10% carmenère from Alto-Adige. Ripe, forward nose of sweet cherries and plums, but initially hollow on the midpalate with a touch of dry tannin on a short finish. With time a green streak emerges, and around the hour mark the vegetal flavor is a bit much, but it eventually recedes. The last glass was best: ripe sweet cherries, lots of tobacco, dark cocoa and a pleasantly chalky sensation i usually get from cab franc. Touch of white pepper on the 25 second finish, still a touch tannic but really nice. Blind i'd have pegged this as an old-school Bordeaux with some merlot and cab franc in the blend. While a bit rough around the edges i really liked the complexity that developed over a few hours, so decanting is a good idea here.
