Community Tasting Notes (6) Avg Score: 91 points

  • This is probably the most disappointing bottle of this wine (or any Merkelbach) I've had. It's just so-so, which is not how I would normally describe it! Very modest aromas of lemon/lime. Medium-bodied with decent weight and extract but again, only modest flavors of green apple and lemon/lime. Medium acidity at best and little minerality. I really hope this turns out to be an off-bottle (I have 2 more). 88?

Two evenings later: this has opened and is becoming more expressive. Perhaps it’s in a dumb phase? This is now more in the 90 point range and much more typical.

  • Lime, lime blossom, petrol. Surprisingly fresh, crisp with very nice weight from the residual sugar, which is kept balanced by bright acidity. Good.

  • There's still a touch of gas that needs to blow off. Aromas of white grapefruit, lime, golden apple, apricot, honeysuckle, spice and petrichor. Dense and layered, silky and sweet, strong integrated acid that only cuts at the very end of the luscious and fruity finish. Great stuff. Still a little young. Surprisingly fresh and light for a Spatlese from this site. This will be worth following for another 10 years, and maybe quite a bit longer.

  • I loved this - such a clear hue that is deceptive as to the intensity of the bright peach and floral tones. Excellent.

  • Pretty yellow fruit, quinine, white flowers, kiwi - tropical but not ripping with sweetness. Petrol and yeast.
Distinct notes of damp dog and then a metallic note on the tail end. Good balance of sweetness and acids
