Another old Barolo winner from Rare Wine. Interesting plastic capsule on this, cork was small and soaked 2/3 up, but came out intact. The color was a lovely pale garnet. The nose initially showed some dried red fruits and loads of truffle and earth; this morphed over time to include dried tobacco, orange peel, leaf litter, and ultimately some mild oxidation notes of fig cake and maybe walnut. Regardless, the nose was fun to follow. The palate still had decent bones with some fruit and mostly savory notes, juicy acidity, and resolved tannins. There was enough concentration to pair well with a truffle pasta and pork loin and the wine held up well throughout. I've had overall pretty solid success with older Fontanafredda bottles so will continue to look for them from the right source.

(Decanted for one hour, but two or three hours would have been better) Brick red colour with a mature nose showing volatile notes, burnt notes and coffee in a very pleasant way. Smooth palate with fully evolved tannins, still showing structure from dried fruit and a refreshing acidity before there’s a dark chocolate bitterness and dried fruit showing on the lengthy finish. This was a very well balanced and pleasant showing mature Barolo and opens up more and more in the glass over the following hours and in the end showing a lovely fruitful freshness in a delicious way. (Best 1994-2024)

Completely sound and classic old Barolo. Bright red, light bodied, still good tannins, red fruit and good acid. Was never anything great but a very good example of sound old Barolo.

So many tertiary notes. Still fresh and lovely. Old root cellar nose. Smoke and tea notes on palate
