  • Delicious.
A California Cab made in classic Bordeaux style - mid and dark red fruited, scent of graphite and pencil shavings, very flavorful but not extracted, light on the tongue. As it warmed in the glass, it grew in power, but never became over powering.

    Rated +2 on a scale of -1 to +3.

  • Not a pop and pour wine and not ready. This wine definitely needs cellaring. Nice purple color and nose. On the palate, tannic and earthy with dark berry fruit (blue, black cran and boysenberry fruit), some oak, earthy soil/ funk and bitter mushroom. I don't know where this wine will go, but it's not my preferred style. 90/91 Points.

  • My construct here is from tasting (how many? thousands of?) wines over the last 50 years. Sometimes I wish I had some of the wines I tried years ago that were just too young. Fortunately, I still have some Tulocay Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1980s, though regrettably no more than a handful. These are incredible samples of what Napa Cabernet Sauvignon can produce, in longevity and power far greater than most more well-known Cabernet Sauvignon-based bottlings. The up-front herbaceousness may turn some tasters off. But that's what 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offers from the Coombsville AVA of Napa.

Tasting 1/25/2020 — This wine has come a long way in a little over two years. The hard edge has dissipated somewhat and the fruit has begun to emerge. Still angular like a northern Médoc but with the fullness and backbone of a Coombsville Cab. From a tiny, one-acre vineyard, this is truly a garagiste's Napa Cab. Already throwing a lot of sediment.

Initial tasting (10/27/2017) — Very young and very tight, as is typical of most Tulocay Cabs in their youth. Will take a long time to come around. (I still have some '87, which is drinking perfectly right now.) In many ways more akin to a classified Médoc or Bolgheri Cab than the generally fat Cabs from Rutherford, St. Helena or Calistoga. Buy and cellar now for drinking 10-20 years in the future.

  • Way too soon to drink this one. Very young and acidic. Calmed down a little after several hours open. Need to wait a few years before drinking these.
