  • AP 14 16. My first experience with this vintner and I'm absolutely thrilled! A little background on Falkenstein - Erich Weber ferments pickings from individual parcels in small, very old, oak barrels. Unlike many producers he doesn't blend the barrels together under one AP number, but instead markets each barrel separately. This results in a mind-boggling number of offering each year (he produced no fewer than 5 Spatlese Feinherb offerings from the Niedermenniger Herrenberg alone in 2015) and the bin at the store I acquired these from were mixed lots.

But enough of the technical details. The wine itself is an absolutely gorgeous, old-school Spatlese. Tart and zesty with a wonderfully food-friendly minerality. Surprisingly conservative for this extroverted vintage. Light and very well balanced - in my mind this is exactly what a drinking Spatlese should be. And perhaps the best part? It cost $21. Buy this and hoard it!
