Well integrated fruit with mineral (chalk) and herbs. Good complexity and in great balance. This a wine that I really like old, in the Middle Ages or young

Just something wonderful about Bionzo. The nose was full of cherry, saline, and (I promise not in a bad way at all) freshly fertilized, cut grass. I know that sounds bizarre, but it had such a nice earthy aroma on top of the cherry fruit. After a short airing, there were lots of blackberry, blueberries, cinnamon, musty vanilla, licorice and floral notes. Strong tannins and long aftertaste.

La Spinetta Barbera d'Asto Superiore 'Bionzo' comes from Barbera grown in the 14 hectare Bionzo vineyard in Castigliole d'Asti, one of Giorgio Rivetti's best vineyard sites. The vines are 45-55 years old with the highly coveted southern exposure seldom given to the Barbera grape. The wine spends a about a year and a half in medium toasted oak barrique so as not to overwhelm the finely tuned nature if these grapes.
You can expect to find this Barbera to be full of fine, dark berries, silky tannins, and a dark cocoa-esque finish. It's an elegant wine that is left unfiltered to add some extra character and depth. Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate had this to say; "Barbera enthusiasts should drop whatever they are doing and actively seek this wine"
Quite drinkable, and nicely rich.
