This was sold by Langton's Australia as a rare opportunity to acquire a vertical vintage of Metala from Langhorne Creek and was bestowed good reviews by the taster. Amongst those was this 1971 bottle. I had noticed that it had been re-corked. Suffice to say, on opening there was little to excite the senses. Smell of soy, hardly any fruit notes and dark. Underwhelming but not surprised for a wine of this age, expected to be way past its peak. But the taste confirmed this was cork tainted. I had never experienced cork taint before, but this bottle was a clear example. It had the taste of wet carpet. It was so overpowering, I had to spit it out of my mouth and down the bottle into the sink. To be honest, I was hoping to taste a flawed wine to educate my senses and this bottle was exceptional at that.
