Good, but I was expecting more somehow. Complexity from a bit of bottle age but I was hoping for a little more depth and finesse based on others’ reviews and tasting other cuvées from the domaine. Still a very competent Cote du Rhone. Hid its 15% well enough but struggled to match the beef cheeks for intensity.

This is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. It was aged for 14 months, in wooden vats and tuns for the Grenache, in barrels for the Syrah. I aerated the wine for a good hour in the carafe before enjoying throughout Sunday lunch. “Les Quartz” is an ambitious cuvée which is certainly several steps above the standards of the appellation. The nose is complex and harmonious with aromas of red berry liqueur, prunes, a bit of leather, scents of garrigue-covered hills and some subtle roasted notes. In the mouth, the body is thinner than expected and the texture is incredibly caressing. Here it's definitely on the finesse and elegance, the complete opposite of the somewhat tiring heaviness that this type of blend can sometimes (often?) deliver. It has a refined and captivating aromatic depth, with some mineral elements, as well as a textbook balance. There's no trace of heat despite the 15% abv written on the label. On the finish, the licorice bitterness can probably seem a little bit naughty to some palates. Not sure there's anything to be gained with more years in the cellar. I guess the wine is on its maturity plateau. This is so delicious! For sure a stunning representative of Côtes-du-Rhône! [Photo on Instagram]

part of a 2016 southern rhone tasting, alongside a mordoree lirac reine des bois and a charbonniere vacqueyras cuvee speciale, this ranked no2 for me and possibly the most balanced of the three. it got a 2 hour decant which seemed to smooth the edges on an otherwise nice fruity dark berry-dominated palate.

Light nose of black ripe fruit, mineral, nice metallic... Very intergated tannin, very sweet black fruit, mineral finish.
