  • From 375ml bottle. This was another lovely bottle of this wine. It is so elegant yet intensely flavorful with notes of olive tapenade to black raspberry, incense, blackberry, plum, game meat and spice, all with bright acidity and a mineral backbone. A totally harmonious package. Long and layered. Youthful and energetic and drinkable but also long lived.

  • From 375ml bottle, this was another nice example of this wine. Somewhat floral nose with violets and lavender. Bright and lithe in texture yet full of Syrah flavor. More akin to a good Cote-Rotie than a Cali or Aussie Syrah/Shiraz. Smokey, game meat and dark berry and plum fruit. Very nuanced and elegant. Long finish. Lovely wine!

  • Lovely nose with lots of violets, black cherries, gamey notes, lavender, and savory. Very well balanced with structural tannins and nice acidity. Similar flavors on the palate. Long finish. Really outstanding CA Syrah. Approachable already, but clearly has all it needs to age for a long time.

  • Large coravin pour from a 750ml bottle. This wine seemed unusual. Either flawed or in a difficult phase. It had an almost vegetal edge on the nose and the palate with a strong overtone of charcoal…very different than any of the 375ml bottles I have already sampled…I will likely open the bottle and decant in the near term for further checking. NR for now…

P.S. The bottle was opened on Dec.11 and examined more carefully with my conclusion that the bottle was flawed by cork taint/TCA. It looked fine, good even, but flavors were dead/muted, odd…

  • CT shows this is my first bottle out of a case ordered as futures. I've come to enjoy Rhys' syrahs even more than their pinots of late, as they show a real Northern Rhone character. That said, something seemed a bit off in this bottle. Not quite corked, but there were some green pyrazines on the nose, which did seem to blow off a bit by day 2. Once they did, this reveals a savory, meaty nose, with lovely black fruit, olive tapenade and game notes. Definitely needs decanting if drinking now.
