Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2023 Edition; 10/20/2023-10/22/2023 (Piedmont, Italy): A very young wine and the richness of the 2013 vintage still needs time to develop. We decanted it too but little effect as the wine is still too primal, not angular or austere but still buttoned down as is really a baby for Barolo standards. The modernity of Clerico comes out but in all but a great way and this is a wine full of promise for the future. 91-92 for now and patience ( like a decade) will be rewarded.

The nose was hauntingly dark, mineral-accented and very pretty, showing notes of leather and cedar shavings up front, along with dried cherries and hints of savory spice. On the palate, I found soft textures in a pure and energetic expression with hard red candies coated in crunchy sweet minerals and fine tannin which slowly mounted with each sip. The finish was long, dry and structured with resonating dark red berries, minerals and sweet herbs. The Aeroplan Servaj was my least favorite of the flight, yet Monforte wines are seldom easy to understand in their youth.
