Community Tasting Notes (6) Median Score: 89 points

  • Wonderful wine, full, complex, yet well integrated. Ready to drink.

Compared to 2016 , and the 2015 showed itself to be the perfect age for drinking

  • Note to others, this line drinks better a few years down the line. I have the 2016 and 2017 next, but will wait to open. That said, this does well to show dark earthy tones, it’s limited on brighter fruit, vanilla, etc. this might be consequential to the 2015.

  • 85. Average table wine. not worth the $24 paid.

  • Deep ruby crimson to purple rim.
Fairly intense entry on the palate with spicy new oak, and plenty of ripe dark fruits.
A juicy entry with an emphasise on oak spices, blackcurrants, and blackberries. Full-bodied, the fruit seems rich and almost dried and baked, such is the ripeness level. There is a spiky alcohol spike that at 14% is surprisingly noticeable—plenty of spices but less acidity, more medium than anything. The tannins seem quite drying and build slightly. Overall, I didn't find the wine that complex; it seemed to have designated boxes of fruit and oak that weren't melded together. It certainly felt ambitious and big but lacked the mid-palate depth relying on oak (ellagic tannin) to build structure rather than fruit-derived tannins. A touch of charcoal on the relatively long finish, this seemed a well-made but undemanding wine. (as a point, I tasted in an arid environment in the Kalahari Reserve) that seem to accentuate a dry, spicy element in all the wines over that time.

  • Bought at a local supermarket for R180 in the afternoon and tried that night at a popular local "no corkage fee" steak restaurant for R360; just learning how wine service works here--stark contrast to home. Many tables have wine so sommelier's "good choice" got my attention. Rich, purple color; full, fragrant red fruit nose tending toward good Cali meritage; body to match + bit of tar, very good mouthfeel. Delicious with the steak dinner. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this outstanding- when considering quality, age, and retail (not wine list) price, though still good value from the wine list.
