Pale cerise terracotta. On opening this had a lovely nose of sweet confection but the palate was quite astringent and harsh. Left to slow ox. 9 hours in the nose is really quite rubbery, the palate transformed with sweet confection, very citrusy, chinotto, strawberries. 10 hours animale, hints of truffle, coniferous forest. 11 hours dark cherries and spice. From 12 hours really singing: the nose which had been fairly reticent to this point comes alive with dark cherries, truffle and confection. The palate is a bit of everything, sweet red fruits, confection, rose, blood orange, cola, spice, nothing tertiary or savoury, vibrant acidity that fills every crevice of the mouth, oh so long and perfectly balanced and weightless. If I’d drunk it all earlier I think I would have been disappointed, finding it perhaps a little lacking complexity and thin, but from 12 hours really completely unfolded and simply singing. Delicious!

Barolo 1964, A Horizontal (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): We would suggest as little decanting as possible, just to remove sediment as this is a fragile wine. Still a decent amount of colour, red with brick tint. Light and fragile nose but with decent amount of fruit, a touch of iron/oxidation (to be expected in a way). Savoury, mushroom, earthy on the palate, elegant and with decent life in it but definitely past its best days. Thin on the mid palate. Still very good showing. (Andreas 90, Nicol 85) 88 avg.
